Evah couldn’t believe that she had made it. She had survived the public dancing and lived to tell the tale. “How long will it take for this stuff to come off?” She rubbed at the markings on her arms and tried to make eye contact with one of the other women.

“Usually three weeks. Shorter if you go to the baths and scrub like hell.” Waval was smiling at her as she redressed in her normal robes.

Evah sighed and waved to the women in the tent, picking up her bag on the way out. A few tugs freed her hair from the cloth that bound it and she was just about to remove the mask when she ran smack into Repal, or to be more exact, his chest.

“I am leaving now. I thank you for your healing and the hospitality of your village.” He set her back from him and bowed deeply.

“Your thanks are welcomed. Be at peace and have a safe journey.” Tears pricked her eyes, but she couldn’t stop them. She removed her mask and looked up at him. “Enjoy the rest of your life.”

“I intend to. Thank you again.” He bowed low over her hand and kissed it, then grabbed her around the waist and pulled her in for a serious kiss. On a scale of one to ten of all the kisses that she had experienced in her life, his was a ninety-five. Her toes were on fire, her belly and even her knees were full of heat by the time he let her go. She staggered for a moment as he mounted his steed with Kaden on the next beast and two guardsmen behind, two in front. Seconds later, they were gone.

She had never felt more like crying like an infant. She returned to an empty home with clean dishes and a fixed bedroom door. She closed and latched her door, ready to forget one of the most interesting men she had ever met.
